A detached garage should be treated as another network location, not as a distant room. The connection between buildings and the equipment inside the garage both need to be designed.
Why the main-house WiFi often fails
Exterior walls, distance, insulation, metal doors, and different building construction weaken the signal before it reaches the detached garage. A marginal connection may work near one window and fail throughout the rest of the structure.
A dedicated link gives the garage a stable path back to the main network.
Fiber for permanent connections
Fiber is an excellent option when conduit exists or trenching is practical. It provides high capacity and electrical isolation between structures.
The remote building typically receives a switch and access point, allowing wired devices and cameras to use the same connection.
Wireless building bridges
A point-to-point bridge can provide a strong link without trenching when there is suitable line of sight and mounting. The bridge is different from a general-purpose WiFi extender because it is dedicated to connecting the two locations.
Mounting height, distance, alignment, weather, obstructions, and available power are reviewed before selection.
Equipment inside the garage
The garage may need an indoor or outdoor access point, PoE switch, cameras, workstation connections, smart controls, or entertainment devices. Metal construction frequently requires equipment inside rather than relying on coverage from outside.
We size the switch and PoE budget for current and future devices.
Installation process
The project includes route and mounting review, link selection, equipment installation, configuration, testing, and documentation.
Performance is tested inside the garage and across the building-to-building connection.

Frequently asked questions
Is a wireless bridge as fast as fiber?
Fiber generally provides the highest capacity and long-term flexibility, while a properly installed bridge can provide strong performance without trenching.
Can the garage have the same WiFi name as the house?
Yes. Properly configured access points can provide consistent network names and roaming.
Can cameras use the same link?
Yes, if the link and switching are sized for the camera traffic and other devices.
What if the garage is metal?
Metal buildings often need a dedicated access point inside the structure.
